In the sport of Bull Ride for Parties in South Carolina, a rider competes for the highest ride score. This is accomplished by attempting to stay on the bull for eight seconds or more, while avoiding being bucked off. The bulls are trained to buck for as long as possible, so riders have to hang on very tight to make the score.
The rider’s equipment includes a helmet and chaps. Chaps are a key piece of apparel, as they protect the rider’s legs and thighs. They are usually made of leather, and they can be colorful or patterned. Another essential piece of equipment is the bull rope, which is typically a round braid of polypropylene or grass with a handle at one end. It is tied to a metal bell, and the bell hangs directly under the bull throughout the ride. Bull riders also wear protective vests, which have foam and ballistic materials like Spectra, similar to Kevlar. The foam and Spectra disperse the shock from the bull to prevent injury.
A wrangler on horseback or other animal distracts the bull, and the rider uses the bull rope to hook himself onto it. The wrangler then lassoes the bull and takes him to the exit chute. Some bulls may wander around the arena after bucking off their riders, as a form of a victory lap before exiting the arena. Throughout the ride, a bullfighter, previously known as a rodeo clown, keeps close to the bull in order to aid the rider and keep him safe.
Scoring is done consistently within a rodeo organization, and the two largest sanctioning bodies are the PRCA and the PBR. Each rider receives a score, and the bull also gets a score, with the best rides earning a score in the 90s. If a rider doesn’t receive a score because the bull bucked them off, he is given the option of a re-ride. If he chooses this option, he gives up the score that he received and waits to ride again until all other riders have had their turns.
